ANDREA CRESPI | HIC ET NUNC | BY ALISIA VIOLA
MA-EC Gallery presents at ArtVerona HIC ET NUNC , an unpublished project by Andrea Crespi curated by Alisia Viola , unveiled for the first time at the fair, scheduled for 9 to 11 October .
The project stems from a reflection on the present as the interval between what has already happened and what has yet to take shape. A minimal period of time, difficult to retain, in which a choice, an event, or an encounter impacts the continuity between past and future and alters its trajectory.
HIC ET NUNC begins with the idea of the parenthesis as an interval within a continuum. In language, the parenthesis temporarily suspends the flow of a sentence and introduces an element before the discourse resumes its normal flow. The curatorship transfers this structure to the temporal plane, considering past, present, and future as parts of a single movement. We retain memories and images of the past, while we project desires and possibilities onto the future. The present represents the point at which these two dimensions come into contact.
This conception of time finds a visual correspondence in the vertical line that runs through the compositions of the new series. Created in oil with a chromatic gradient and inserted into the pattern of black and white marks, the line introduces a discontinuity in the flow of the image and identifies the present moment. It separates two conditions and, at the same time, establishes their point of contact. It becomes a visual threshold through which the past meets what has yet to take shape.
On either side of this parenthesis are different projections of time. On one side, forms linked to statuary and the legacy of classical beauty emerge, a sedimented repertoire that continues to guide the representation of the human figure. On the other, the same forms undergo a metamorphosis, incorporating mechanical and robotic components and anticipating a possible evolution of the body.
In the project, technology and classicism are not opposed. Classicism remains the matrix through which we continue to read and represent the body, while technology enters the figure as an element of its transformation. The images thus connect memory and possibility, origin and mutation.
The curatorial choice focuses attention on the transition between these two conditions. The figures become temporal mirrors. What comes from the past turns toward the future, and what we imagine as the future retains traces of its origins. Between these two extremes lies the present, understood as a space in which transformation remains possible.
HIC ET NUNC is part of Andrea Crespi's research on the relationship between the human figure, visual culture, and technological transformation. In this new series, the artist focuses his investigation on the temporal dimension and the way in which bodily change alters our perception of who we have been and our imagination of what we might become.
The project presented by MA-EC Gallery at ArtVerona thus builds the booth around a single curatorial core: the present as the threshold between memory and possibility. An infinitesimal interval, the here and now, in which past and future intertwine and the direction of time remains open to change.
