ONLY BLUE AND GREEN
Qian Wu's first solo exhibition in Milan
On Wednesday 10 July 2024, the exhibition Only Blue and Green will open at the MA-EC Gallery, the first solo exhibition by Chinese artist Qian Wu in Milan, curated by Elisabetta Roncati .
Five works from the blue series, eight from the emerald green and eight others combining the two cycles are being exhibited together for the first time in such large numbers.
The starting point of the project, says Roncati, was the reflection on the traditional "blue-green landscape" of Chinese ink painting (" The blue-green shan shui "). The name of this style derives from the use of mineral pigments such as azurite and malachite as the main colors that reflect the essence of nature and oriental wisdom. An important source of inspiration for Qian Wu not only on a visual level, but also and above all spiritual. In fact, the artist attributes meanings to the two shades that go beyond the color to reach the emotional sphere. He follows the principles of time and space and reflects on the possibility of connecting opposite concepts such as "order" and "disorder", "construction" and "deconstruction", according to a principle of connection that follows that of Yin and Yang .
Born in Xiamen, Fujian Province, in 1991, Qian Wu studied calligraphy, painting and traditional Chinese poetic literature from an early age: from Chu Elegies to ancient folk songs, from Tang poetry to Song lyric poetry and Yuan compositions. This deep connection with the written word has had a strong impact on his aesthetic sense. For him, tradition has never been an impediment, but a starting point. After all, the very concept of "heritage" has always interested him greatly and has never been a brake on his desire to experiment.
The Only Blue and Green exhibition and the color green become a symbol of the ongoing cultural exchange between Milan and China, a bridge that connects different worlds through art and history. Qian Wu's works, with their combination of tradition and innovation, reflect an intercultural dialogue that continues to evolve. Green and blue, colors that transcend time and space, invite us to look beyond the horizon and imagine a future in which cultural differences are a source of wealth and inspiration.
Qian Wu has numerous solo and group exhibitions and awards to his credit, including the Arte Laguna Prize (Emerging Artist Award) in 2022 and the Fiorino d'oro del XL Premio Firenze awarded to him in December 2023 at Palazzo Vecchio. Among his most recent solo exhibitions, One night in Florence 2023, 2023 “Black and Blue”, 3812 Gallery, London, 2023 “Blue|Qian Wu Solo Exhibition”, Cultural Association MoCA (Modern and Contemporary Art)/Madeinartgallery, Venice. In 2021 he is in the Forbes ranking of the best Chinese artists Under 30.
