17th Milan Photo Festival

Reflection of the soul. The inner and outer through image

Critical text by Chiara Canali

Opening: Saturday, October 1st at 5 pm

October 1-16, 2022

Scalvini Museum – Villa Cusani Tittoni Traversi, Desio

On Saturday 1 October 2022, the stately halls of the Scalvini Museum in Desio will host the exhibition conceived by the MA-EC Gallery for this seventeenth edition of the Milano Photofestival.

Reflection of the soul. The inner and outer through image brings together photographers from Europe, America, and China. As Chiara Canali , author of the critical essay in the catalog, states, "These artists, with diverse backgrounds, training, and geographic origins, bear witness to the current times through their own visions—some more interior and psychic, others aimed at investigating life, society, and the external environment in which we live. A first group of photographers connects their work to corporeality through a reflection that seeks to recover the original meaning of the term "aesthetics" as a science of perception. Studies have revealed that the perception of bodies in photography exclusively activates the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, an area highly involved in many complex cognitive tasks. This photography imposes a new way of seeing, new relationships between the viewing subject, between the device and the object of vision and representation. A second group of photographers, instead, claims that photography has the ability to be in tune with its own time and space, to know how to represent it well, and therefore to be capable of giving rise to effective and synesthetic experiences of reality."

The seventeenth edition of Milano Photofestival, an annual art photography festival, invites us to reflect on the importance of the photographic lens for observing the world, and ourselves, through fresh eyes. A month and a half of photography featuring both established names and emerging photographers, with over 150 exhibitions spread across the Metropolitan City of Milan, Lombardy, and, for the first time, other Italian cities. 115 exhibition venues, including art galleries, museums, libraries, historic buildings, and photography shops, will be involved.

Milan's largest and most important festival dedicated to fine art photography is organized and promoted by AIF - Associazione Italiana Foto & Digital Imaging in collaboration with Impresa Cultura Confcommercio Milano . Numerous exhibitions, as well as meetings, presentations, portfolio reviews, and workshops, foster a passion for photographic images. This festival strengthens its presence in the region and diversifies its offerings, expanding its cultural collaborations.
